The February Cooking Challenge!

I know you’ve all been waiting impatiently for the next cooking challenge, and finally, here’s the news! I won’t tell you all the hin-und-her that I went through trying to come up with one. I don’t want to require ingredients that are too exotic (at least not yet ;)), don’t want them to be too expensive, don’t want to dictate too many limitations into the challenge, don’t want it to be too open-ended, etc. You get the picture. And since we’re, um, I guess, flexitarian around here, I stay away from meat most of the time — although I want to allow you to add meat if you must.
This month’s challenge was inspired by Terri, who would win a real cooking contest anytime if she entered such a thing. She is a fabulous, knowledgeable cook, among all her other excellent qualities. She suggested a winter-vegetable challenge — perfect for the season! I amended it a bit to a root-vegetable challenge, but as you’ll see, the formula will allow you to add other winter vegetables, if you have an insatiable craving for butternut squash, for example. This challenge uses a formula, but you’ll see it allows for an infinite amount of leeway.
Here it is:

root vegetable(s) (e.g. turnips, beets, carrots, potatoes, parsnips, etc.)
+
fat (e.g. oil, butter, lard) — optional, if you’re trying to go fat-free
+
something sweet
+
something salty
+
anything else you want!

That sounds really easy, right? The only limitation is that you can’t look up a recipe for inspiration or guidance. Just figure it out on your own. You can prepare it however you want. Be creative!

When you submit your entry, please write up your recipe and whatever other notes you want to include. Send me a photo if you can. If you need to email me but don’t have my email address, write me a comment to that effect, and I’ll email you.

Due: Wed., Feb. 25. That’s 10 days — no problem.

This challenge’s prize will go to the cook with the most creative entry — as decided by your comments. And the prize choices will be the same: rice sock, cloth wipes, cloth napkins, or a cookbook off my shelf.

All right, get cookin’.
